Italian Schematic and Machinery Terms: A Working Glossary
Italy builds an enormous amount of industrial machinery, and the documentation often stays in Italian long after the machine crosses a border. The good news for a technician: the symbols on an Italian hydraulic schematic follow ISO 1219 and read exactly like their English-language equivalents. What you need is the vocabulary printed around them: component names, pressures, ports, and the maintenance instructions that tell you what to actually do.
This glossary collects the Italian terms technicians meet most often on schematics, nameplates, and maintenance pages, with plain English equivalents. Accents matter for lookup: pressione is easy, but velocità and sostituzione will not look up correctly without them.
New to the symbols themselves? How to Read a Hydraulic Schematic walks through the ISO 1219 symbols, port labels, and a step-by-step method for tracing any circuit.
Components: valves
| Italian | English | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| la valvola | valve | the general word |
| valvola limitatrice di pressione / valvola di sicurezza | pressure relief valve / safety valve | limits maximum system pressure |
| valvola riduttrice di pressione | pressure reducing valve | limits pressure downstream |
| valvola di ritegno / antiritorno | check valve | one-direction flow |
| valvola di intercettazione | shut-off valve | isolation, not control |
| valvola distributrice / distributore | directional control valve | often seen with a count, e.g. distributore 4/3 |
| valvola proporzionale | proportional valve | continuously variable |
| valvola di strozzatura | throttle valve | flow control; with a built-in check for free return: con ritegno |
Components: pumps, cylinders, and accessories
| Italian | English | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| la pompa | pump | |
| il motore | motor | electric or hydraulic |
| il cilindro (idraulico) | cylinder | hydraulic or pneumatic actuator |
| lo stantuffo / il pistone | piston | |
| lo stelo | piston rod | |
| il serbatoio | reservoir / tank | |
| l'accumulatore | accumulator | |
| il filtro | filter | |
| il raffreddatore d'olio | oil cooler | heat exchanger |
| l'attacco / l'orifizio | port / orifice |
Pressures, flow, and readings
| Italian | English |
|---|---|
| la pressione | pressure |
| pressione di esercizio | operating pressure |
| pressione massima | maximum pressure |
| pressione di prova | test pressure |
| pressione d'ingresso / contropressione | inlet pressure / back pressure |
| la portata | flow rate |
| la velocità di rotazione / i giri al minuto | rotational speed (rpm) |
| la coppia | torque |
| la forza / la corsa | force / stroke |
| la perdita / il ritorno perdite | leakage / case drain |
| la temperatura / il riscaldamento | temperature / heating (temperature rise) |
Port labels on Italian directional valves
Italian hydraulic drawings use the same international port letters as ISO drawings: P (pressione), T (serbatoio, tank return), A and B (attacchi di lavoro, the working ports), X, Y, Z (comando / pilota, pilot ports), and L (ritorno perdite, the case drain). The letters transfer directly; the words beside them are what need translating.
Lines and connections
| Italian | English |
|---|---|
| la conduttura / il tubo | line, pipe |
| conduttura di pressione | pressure line |
| condotta di ritorno | return line |
| condotta di aspirazione | suction line |
| condotta di comando | pilot / control line |
| il raccordo | fitting |
Maintenance and documentation words
| Italian | English |
|---|---|
| la regolazione / regolare | setting / to set, adjust |
| la verifica / verificare | inspection, check / to check |
| in funzione / fermo | running / stopped |
Two sentence patterns cover a surprising amount of Italian maintenance text: "ogni X ore di funzionamento" (every X operating hours) and "vedere il manuale d'istruzioni" (see the operating manual).
Standards behind Italian drawings
Italian hydraulic schematics are drawn to UNI EN ISO 1219, the Italian adoption of the ISO 1219 fluid power standard, so the symbols read like any ISO drawing. Process and instrumentation documents in Italian industry often keep ISA-5.1-style tag letters while the surrounding words stay Italian. The symbols are universal; it is the text around them that needs translating.
Translating the drawing itself
You can hold this glossary next to a drawing and work out most component names. But set pressures, alarm notes, and step-by-step procedures deserve better than word-by-word decoding. Schematic Translator photographs an Italian schematic and overlays verified English on every text block, keeping every number and symbol exactly as printed, so nothing critical gets guessed.
Have an Italian schematic on your bench? Photograph it and get verified English overlaid on the original drawing. Every pressure, part number, and symbol stays exactly as the manufacturer printed it.
