German Schematic and Machinery Terms: A Working Glossary

Technical guide · Schematic Translator · September 2026

German-built machinery comes with excellent documentation, and much of it stays in German long after the machine reaches an English-speaking floor. The good news for a technician: the symbols on a German hydraulic or electrical schematic follow ISO standards and read exactly like their English-language equivalents. What you need is the vocabulary printed around them: component names, pressures, ports, and the maintenance instructions that tell you what to actually do.

This glossary collects the German terms technicians meet most often on schematics, nameplates, and maintenance pages, with plain English equivalents. Umlauts matter: Rückschlagventil and Druckminderer will not look up correctly without them.

New to the symbols themselves? How to Read a Hydraulic Schematic walks through the ISO 1219 symbols, port labels, and a step-by-step method for tracing any circuit.

Components: valves

GermanEnglishNotes
das Ventilvalvethe general word
Druckbegrenzungsventilpressure relief valveliterally "pressure limiting valve"; limits maximum system pressure
Druckminderer / Druckminderventilpressure reducing valvelimits pressure downstream
Rückschlagventilcheck valveone-direction flow
Absperrventil / Absperrorganshut-off valve / isolating elementisolation, not control
Wegeventildirectional control valveoften seen with a count, e.g. 4/3-Wegeventil
Stetigventil / Regelventilproportional / control valvecontinuously variable
Drossel(-rückschlagventil)throttle (check) valveflow control, often with a built-in check for free return

Components: pumps, cylinders, and accessories

GermanEnglishNotes
die Pumpepump
der Motormotorelectric or hydraulic
der Zylindercylinderhydraulic or pneumatic actuator
der Kolben / die Kolbenstangepiston / piston rod
der Behälter / der Tankreservoir / tank
der Speicher (Druckspeicher)accumulator (pressure accumulator)
der Filter / die Filtereinheitfilter / filter unit
der Ölkühler / Kühleroil cooler / coolerheat exchanger
der Anschluss / die Anschlüsseport / ports, connections

Pressures, flow, and readings

GermanEnglish
der Druckpressure
Betriebsdruckoperating pressure
Maximaldruck / Höchstdruckmaximum pressure
Prüfdrucktest pressure
der Vordruck / Gegendruckinlet pressure / back pressure
die Fördermenge / Förderstromflow rate / delivery flow
die Drehzahlrotational speed (rpm)
das Drehmomenttorque
die Kraft / der Hubforce / stroke
die Leckölleitung / Leckölleakage oil line / leakage oil
die Temperatur / die Erwärmungtemperature / heating (temperature rise)

Port labels on German directional valves

German drawings use the same international port letters as ISO drawings, so the letters transfer directly. What differs is that German documents also spell them out: P (Pressure / Druck), T (Tank / Behälter), A and B (working ports / Arbeitsanschlüsse), X, Y, Z (pilot ports / Steueranschlüsse), and L (leakage or drain / Leckölanschluss).

Lines and connections

GermanEnglish
die Leitungline, pipe, hose (electrical: wire)
Druckleitungpressure line
Rücklaufleitung / Rückleitungreturn line
Saugleitungsuction line
Steuerleitungpilot / control line
die Verschraubung / der Gewindeanschlussfitting / threaded connection

Maintenance and documentation words

GermanEnglish
die Wartung / die Instandhaltungmaintenance / upkeep
die Instandsetzungrepair
der Ölwechseloil change
der Filterwechselfilter change
der Schmierplanlubrication schedule
die Betriebsanleitungoperating manual / instructions
der Schaltplancircuit / schematic diagram
die Störung / die Störungssuchefault, malfunction / troubleshooting
die Sicherheitshinweisesafety instructions
die Einstellung / einstellensetting / to set, adjust
die Prüfung / prüfeninspection, test / to check
ersichtlich / entnehmenvisible, evident / to take from (a source)

Two sentence patterns cover a surprising amount of German maintenance text: "alle X Betriebsstunden" (every X operating hours) and "siehe Betriebsanleitung" (see the operating manual).

Field habit: when a German drawing mixes words you know with words you do not, translate the whole block, not the unknown word alone. Compound nouns like Druckbegrenzungsventil decode reliably once you know the pieces (Druck = pressure, Begrenzung = limiting, Ventil = valve), but setpoints and interlock notes only make sense as complete sentences.

Standards behind German drawings

German hydraulic schematics are drawn to DIN ISO 1219, the German adoption of the ISO 1219 fluid power standard; older drawings may use DIN 24300 symbols that ISO 1219 largely absorbed. Electrical schematics follow DIN EN 61082 drafting rules, with component reference letters serving the same role that tag numbers serve on a P&ID. The symbols read like any ISO drawing; it is the surrounding text that needs translating.

Translating the drawing itself

You can hold this glossary next to a drawing and work out most component names. But set pressures, alarm notes, and step-by-step procedures deserve better than word-by-word decoding. Schematic Translator photographs a German schematic and overlays verified English on every text block, keeping every number and symbol exactly as printed, so nothing critical gets guessed.

Have a German schematic on your bench? Photograph it and get verified English overlaid on the original drawing. Every pressure, part number, and symbol stays exactly as the manufacturer printed it.
